Photographs
2001 – 2017

Fani Zguro is an Albanian artist who explores various media: painting, drawing, installation, video and photography. In this presentation he selects a series of photographs made over a long period of time, from 2001 to 2017. They show various situations, from documentation of performances and site-specific installations to recent images that examine brutal urbanism and other fragments of everyday life. The series “Early Works” (2001-02) contains various photographic documentation of his first performances and installations, including interventions in public spaces. “Portraits” is part of a series with the same title, where the artist photographs portraits of his ´heroes´ (artists and curators), but using a flash in a dark setting that makes each figure impossible to recognize (kill your darlings). The same result happens in the photo “In a Blink of An Eye” (John Baldessari),” but through a different process, exploiting an error in a jpg file that gets destroyed during exportation.
A process very close to that of the series “Anarchy of Image,” where various frames are exported from the video “Anarchy,” completely destroyed, creating a new work. The series “Parallel Lives” (2017) documents certain architectural situations in the city of Athens, images that reproduce the etchings of Piranesi, ruins upon ruins, on their own. Other parallel images are seen in the case of the diptych of 2017, showing framed prints inside the interiors of an old, luckily forgotten house. The selection continues with the project “5 Editions,” a scanner error to reproduce the dark panorama of the space. “Fur” is a detail that focuses on a half-bearded subject, while “To Divide It” is the photograph of a cigarette, used by youngsters just getting started with drugs in the 1990s, sharing out everything among themselves, marked with a pen to create a series of tabs to keep everyone honest.
