Equipped with her Pentax 6×7, Berber Theunissen (Netherlands, 1989) shoots portraits, still lives and landscapes. She uses photography to create some kind of safeguard. Berber documents the situations she has little grasp of. She captures the moments, emotions and memories in which these intense emotional situations were present or revolving around her. She reflect upon her own struggles by looking how her friends and people who surround her cope with the same situations and emotions. For Berber photography is a tool to look at her own life in an objective way.
Berber was born in a small village when in The Netherlands. When she was 18, she packed her bags and moved to Amsterdam. Where she graduated Cum Laude from the Photo Academy. After eight years surrounded by the chaotic city life, she really started missing the woods, the quiet and the smells of nature. January 1st of 2015 she moved back to the dutch countryside, the surrounding that inspires her most.
“Focus my camera on things that affect me personally. Things that I love, but also things that make me feel vulnerable. I capture moments, feelings and memories of intense emotional value to me, or to the people around me. My photographs are reflections of the memories in my mind. I take photographs because I want to preserve what is otherwise lost forever; time.
Photography offers me a foothold, enabling me to observe my life in a more objective way. I reflect upon my own struggles by looking at how my friends and others around me cope with similar situations and feelings.
Photography helps me create a sense of peace within my chaotic being. I’m obsessed with this thing called life, this absurd, all-consuming life, from the highs to the lows and every little thing in between. Obsessed with all the different kinds of moods and vibes we experience, day in, day out. Even the little things can cause an emotional rollercoaster of tears and laughter. We can understand some of these experiences, but others offer us no clue. I’m infinitely curious about how to cope – as a human being, physically and mentally, as a person, as a girlfriend. Feeling so small in an universe so big.”
